This weeks topic is the principles of refracted light

"Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium where it's speed is different. The refraction of light when it passes from a fast medium to a slow medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media."

There are many examples of refracted light in the natural world.Since time began man has observed this natural phenomena and used its properties for a variety of purposes. From architectural surveying to magic tricks the properties of light are a fascinating study. Its ironic that the biblical uses of the word 'light' are used to portray openness, truth and understanding yet man has found it to be illusions companion.

Magic Light?

Refracted light in magic is widely used in optical illusion tricks.Pepper's ghost is a perfect example.Lots of people's ghostly sightings can be explained by bending light.

The ancient tribes of the earth were well versed in refracted light. The spear fisherman knew that the suns rays altered their perception of fish under the water so adjusted their strike accordingly.

Old Masters

Old masters used refracted light to beam an image of their subject onto the canvas. You can clearly see through history where this process  became popular as the paintings become more accurate.

Wrong Army

Ancient armies used refracted light to project a different perception of their whereabouts thus buying them extra valuable time.

Desert mirages, the curse of the thirsty traveller, are refracted light images often appearing miles from the original source.
